WHAT IS EORI NUMBER?

EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a unified database of enterprises that carry out the foreign economic activity (export/import of goods) in the territory of the European Union. The customs authorities have access to this database, which checks the availability of EORI numbers when carrying out all trade operations across the EU border.

The EORI number is required for all companies of any form of ownership, whose activities are related to the import, export and transit of goods within the European Union. Without such a code, the filing of customs declarations for the transport of goods and the movement of goods themselves across the EU border will be impossible.

WHO NEEDS EORI?

The registration and identification number of the economic operator is required if the company moves goods:

• between the UK (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country (including the European Union);

• between the UK and Northern Ireland;

• between the UK and the Channel Islands;

• between Northern Ireland and countries outside the EU.

TYPES OF EORI

Depending on where and from where the movement of goods is planned, it is determined what type of EORI the company will need. In this case, more than one EORI number may be needed.

1) If the company is registered in the UK, then in order to trade across the border, it needs to obtain an EORI code that starts with GB.

2) If a company will be moving goods to or from Northern Ireland, an EORI code starting with XI will be required.

3) If a company will be moving goods to the European Union, an EORI code from an EU country is required.

BREXIT AND EORI NUMBERS FOR TRADE WITH THE EU

Since 2021, after the final withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, the conditions for trading with the latter have changed, in connection with which the previously obtained EORI numbers of British companies that began with GB are no longer suitable for trading with the EU. For the movement of goods between the UK and non-EU countries such as Ukraine, the old EORI code, which starts with GB, will remain valid. Therefore, all companies registered in the UK and carrying out customs transportation to the countries of the European Union under the T.I.R. procedure need to obtain a new EORI code, which will be accepted by the customs authorities of all EU member states.

HOW TO GET A NEW EORI CODE?

The new number must be obtained in one of the EU countries, while it is recommended to do this in the country where the first European shipment will be made. In the future, this number must be indicated in all electronic transit declarations.

The format of the code, the procedure for registering an economic operator and assigning a number is determined by each country of the European Union independently. Therefore, the cost of registering the EORI code will also be formed individually, depending on the country of its receipt.

HOW DO I KNOW THE VALIDITY OF YOUR EORI CODE?

The assigned EORI numbers for trade with the European Union are brought together in a single register of the EU Commission and you can check their validity by following the link.

You can check your EORI code for trading with other countries, which starts with the abbreviation GB here.

Please note that if you do not have the correct EORI number, there may be delays at customs and increased storage costs until the correct code is received.
